Alcatel-Lucent found smart ways for its communication technology to put together the network in a high performance concept vehicle, the so-called Long Term Evolution Connected Car. The car’s passengers can choose from among four video screens (on the dashboard, glove compartment and behind headrests) as they watch TV shows or dabble in multiplayer video gaming, among other features.

The car is a product of a multi-company NG Connect Program, of which Alcatel-Lucent is a member.

“In essence, Alcatel-Lucent provides the ‘connected’ in the LTE Connected Car concept vehicle,” the company said in a statement. It described the concept vehicle as a virtual “smartphone on wheels,” and said its offerings include combining a broadband radio link to bring cloud-based multimedia services into the car and a Wi-Fi environment.

NG Connect is a multi-industry collaboration among network, device, application and content suppliers, Alcatel-Lucent said. A representative couldn’t immediately detail the precise contribution of the company’s researchers at its Bell Laboratories, in the Murray Hill section of New Providence.
