U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-Hoboken) last week voted against an energy bill sponsored by Senate Energy Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico), saying it does not go “far enough to spur the production of clean energy.” He said the targets for renewable energy are weak, called for a bigger coastline drilling buffer zone and faulted electricity transmission provisions that encourage coal-generated power.

Menendez, a member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, said a target of 15 percent of all energy coming from renewable sources is “weak,” and only 9 percent may be achieved in reality, as many utilities are exempted and “the definitions of ‘renewable’ have been stretched.” Electricity transmission rules continue to favor coal-fired power generation, he added.

Menendez also faulted the feds for setting a 45-mile buffer zone in the Gulf of Mexico for coastline drilling by oil companies, saying it would set “a risky precedent” for states like New Jersey.
