By Martin C. DaksDavid Harrington, 47, of Orange, pleaded guilty last week to demanding personal services and cash in exchange for expediting inspections of contracting projects.
In exchange for speedy inspections, Harrington had contractors work on his home. The services included laying a concrete driveway, completing siding repair, and purchasing and installing a new heating, air-conditioning and ventilation system, Marra said.
Harrington also admitted he extorted funds by directing a contractor to pay more than $1,079 for “fire inspection certification” classes in exchange for timely and expedited inspections, Marra said.
“This was a public employee entrusted with a high level of authority and discretion, who abused that responsibility to fulfill his personal, greedy and corrupt needs,” Marra said.
Harrington faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced by U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton on Sept. 17. He is free on $50,000 bond.
