Three businesses won prizes packages valued at more than $15,000 — including coaching and Web hosting — at this week’s annual early-stage business competition of the Central Jersey chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

The winners of the Supporting Emerging Entrepreneurs’ Development contest were Orella Moves, a Fanwood relocation firm; Jams by Kim, of Hillsborough, an artisanal jam and jelly maker; and Choice Leaders in Monmouth Beach, a management consulting firm. Entrepreneurs do not have to be a member of the chapter to apply for SEED.

“We look at the business plan: how are they organized, how do they intend to grow, what is their product and service, and do they meet a need in the community,” said Judy Hathaway, a past president of the chapter. “What we are hoping is that they become a strong, viable business with our support.”

She said most of the SEED prizes are designed to help the company grow, and include products and services that emerging businesses usually cannot afford on their own, such as brand development consulting, legal advice, and sales and communications coaching.

A company must be less than two years old to enter the contest, which this year received twice as many applicants as last year, Hathaway said. NAWBO will begin accepting applications in January for the 2011 SEED contest, and winners will be chosen next spring.
