The reduced planting is attributed to a shift to soy beans and other high-value crops. Less corn means less feedstock and a potential escalation of prices in dairy, beef and other segments.
Michael Ryan, executive director for the Eastern Perishable Products Association in Wanaque, says food processors and stores may need to take action to protect profits.
"There is a combination of strategies being deployed," says Ryan. "One is price increases. Another is downsizing the product. Some people are choosing to cut back on promotional activity. It is a hot topic."
