International dairy co-operative The Dutch Royal FrieslandCampina NV acquired Iselin-based importer and distributor Jana Foods for an undisclosed sum of money, the company announced Wednesday.

The acquisition will strengthen FrieslandCampina’s position in supplying specialty Dutch specialty cheeses to the U.S. Market., according to Gert Jan Poort, president of FrieslandCampina Consumer Dairy U.S.

“This acquisition in combination with our local cheese import business [will] create a solid platform to be able to offer value-added specialty cheese products in the U.S. to supermarkets, club stores and mass merchandisers,” he said.

The company offers a wide range of specialty imported Dutch cheeses, and Jana Foods has been a strategic partner of FrieslandCampina for many years, importing and marketing its cheeses to the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark, Australia and more.

“The imported cheese market in the U.S. is growing, and Dutch cheese in particular,” said Poort. “Gouda is one of the fastest growing types of cheese and we want to be a larger part of this growing segment. We have started presenting some of our new cheese innovations and having a larger sales organization will enable us to present to the market even faster.”

The company’s U.S. headquarters are located in Paramus. With locations in 34 countries, nearly 24,000 employees worldwide and annual turnover of over $13 billion, it’s one of the biggest dairy companies in the world.

Former owner and CEO of Jana Foods Dan Lynch will remain involved in the business as vice president of imports and senior commercial advisor.

Financial details about this transaction will not be disclosed.
