The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $7 million grant to Newark Liberty International Airport, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced Thursday.

Federal officials said the airport will use the grant money to rehabilitate several of its structures that support the access road to and around the Central Terminal Area.

“These Airport Improvement Grants are investments in our country’s critical infrastructure,” Chao said in a statement. “This grant is a down payment to ensure that Newark Liberty International Airport remains an economic engine as demand grows.”

The FAA announced a total of $586 million in airport infrastructure grants to fund projects across the U.S.
