The iconic brown-and-white-striped bags are to be no more.
Women’s luxury brand Henri Bendel, which this year celebrated its 123rd year in business, is closing its doors and website for good in January, said L Brands, which took over the specialty store in 1985.
That includes its flagship Fifth Avenue location in New York City as well as one at The Mall in Short Hills.
L Brands said the shuttering of Henri Bendel will enable the company to focus on its other brands it believes have better long-term prospects. These include Victoria’s Secret, PINK and Bath & Body Works.
“We are committed to improving performance in the business and increasing shareholder value,” Leslie Wexner, chairman and CEO of L Brands, said in a statement. “As part of that effort, we have decided to stop operating Bendel to improve company profitability and focus on our larger brands that have greater growth potential.”
