Catherine Hebson, former chairman of the board of Raritan Valley Community College and longtime Hunterdon County resident, died Aug. 23 on Isabela Island in the Galápagos, the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce announced Monday. She was 75.
Hebson was born on April 17, 1943, in Jersey City as the eldest of six children. She graduated with a bachelor of science from Chestnut Hill College, a master’s of economics from the University of Wyoming and a doctorate in regional economics from Rutgers University, according to the Chamber.
A Hunterdon resident since 1983, Hebson taught at Centenary College, Rutgers University and Raritan Valley Community College.
At RVCC, she sat on the board of trustees between 1986 and 2017 and chaired the board from 2011 to 2013, in addition to her membership on the RVCC Foundation Board.
RVCC board chair Robert Wise called Hebson “a true champion of Raritan Valley Community College.”
“When Hunterdon and Somerset County Freeholders approved co-sponsorship of the College in 1986, Catherine was the first trustee appointed to represent Hunterdon County, and she did so with grace, commitment, and determination,” Wise said.
Former RVCC board chair Paul Hirsch said Hebson was “a great champion for students and a wonderful advocate for so many of the college’s programs.”
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Edward Nash Theatre on RVCC’s Branchburg campus.
