Simon Nynens is joining the New Jersey Institute of Technology as vice president of business incubation and executive director of commercialization, the university has announced.

In March, Nynens announced his resignation from Eatontown-based Wayside Technology Group where he served as chairman, president and chief executive officer for 12 years.

In the new role, effective Sept. 4, Nynens will develop and expand programs to foster commercialization services and entrepreneurship. This includes leading the school’s Enterprise Development Center, according to NJIT, the oldest and largest technology incubator in the state.

“We are extremely fortunate to attract someone of Simon’s business experience, commitment and leadership talent to this very important role …” NJIT President Joel Bloom said in a statement. “Economic development is a key component of our university mission, and we continue to build multiple partnerships with industry.”

During his time at Wayside revenues for the firm increased from $180 million to $450 million and the company was named to the NJBIZ Best Places to Work list five times.

“NJIT truly has a unique opportunity to accelerate and help companies grow faster and smarter … NJIT has the resources, experience and expertise to truly make an impact,” Nynens said in a release.

Nynens served as chair of the New Jersey Technology Council from 2007 to 2015, and is still an active member. He was named an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in New Jersey, for Technology Services, in 2011.
