University Place takes shape as Jersey City's RIVET opens doors

Wednesday’s ribbon-cutting at Jersey City’s RIVET celebrated more than just the arrival of the development, it ushered in the beginning of a new era for the surrounding West End neighborhood and its transformation into University Place.

Built upon a public-private partnership, RIVET was developed by The Hampshire Cos. and Claremont Cos. in conjunction with New Jersey City University and Jersey City.

Representatives from all parties attended the event, including Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.

“Today, we cut the ribbon for RIVET, the first apartment building to open at University Place, and celebrate the progress that is being made in this bold redevelopment project,” NJCU President Sue Henderson said at the ceremony. “It is transformative for both NJCU and our local community. University Place is a prime example of a win-win solution made possible through collaborative efforts involving the New Jersey Legislature, local government, the University and the business community.”

The development of University Place will see the construction of eight buildings, 1,000 residential units, over 120,000 square feet of retail space, a performing arts center, green space and more.

RIVET at 23 University Blvd. houses 163 residential units ranging from 550 square feet to 1,300 square feet, with 10,000 square feet of ground level retail space. The building features a amenities including a cyber cafe with WiFi access, a 15,000-square-foot courtyard and sundeck and yoga studio.
