Paul Matey, former Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of New Jersey and University Hospital general counsel, will join the team at Lowenstein Sandler as partner in September. He will work out of the firm’s Roseland office.

Matey is the latest high-profile attorney to join the firm, following Ryan Wilson, former Assistant U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of New York and member of former President Obama’s Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities Task Force; and former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino, among others.

“Paul is perhaps the smartest lawyer I’ve ever met,” said Porrino, partner and chair of Lowenstein’s litigation department. “I've been after him in one way or another for a while, and was really glad that he decided to take the plunge and join us.”

Porrino told NJBIZ the firm is looking to acquire talent and is focusing on hiring lawyers who bring with them skills to further the practice overall, rather than those with portable business.

“Paul is a really unique combination and he fits in a couple different ways,” he said. “First, he’s a former federal prosecutor. We do a lot of white-collar criminal defense work and he’s got a ton of experience there. Second, as a former state government employee in the Governor’s Office, he really is a regulatory expert as it relates to issues involving New Jersey.

“And the third thing is he was general counsel at University Hospital and is a real expert in the health care area. He hits it in three separate ways — federal, state and health care. When we look at the kinds of things we see coming in the door, he’s just a perfect fit.”

Most recently, Matey oversaw legal and regulatory matters at Newark’s University Hospital and negotiated agreements and payments valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. He was a legal advisor to former Gov. Chris Christie, and as an AUSA from 2005 to 2009, he prosecuted complex white-collar crimes including investor fraud, securities fraud, health care fraud and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Beyond experience, Porrino said what he looks for – and found in Matey – are colleagues “you want to spend more time with than less. Why would you want someone to join your firm as a partner if you don't like them? I think some law firms forget that. ... Paul is a really good guy. If his colleagues see that, it only makes sense that his clients will, too."

Matey has also been nominated to serve as a Circuit Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He is currently awaiting confirmation.
