Former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio will serve as an advisor for Nuka Enterprises, a Colorado-based cannabis edibles company.
Florio, through his law firm Florio Perrucci Steinhardt & Capelli LLC, will help navigate Nuka’s planned expansion into New Jersey, whose lawmakers said they are pushing for legalization of adult-use recreational marijuana by the end of the summer. The policy was a key campaign platform of Gov. Phil Murphy.
“The deal adds significant political and intellectual capital to Nuka's advisory board as the company brings its expertise, history of innovation, and market leadership to New Jersey,” said Nuka Enterprise CEO Peter Barsoom in a statement, adding New Jersey “has the potential to be totally transformative for cannabis.”
Nuka’s specialty product is the 1906 cannabis edible, which according to a statement issued Thursday offers “artisanal chocolate formulations include go for energy, high love for arousal, midnight for sleep, pause for relaxation and bliss for euphoria.”
“As the state moves rapidly toward adult-use legalization and an expansion of medicinal programs, Florio and Nuka will bring their insights, experience and resources to New Jersey legislators, organizations and businesses to ensure responsible development and implementation of new policies,” Barsoom said.
For the short-term, marijuana has been effectively decriminalized after Attorney General Gurbir Grewal called for an adjournment until Sept. 4 on all low-level, municipal marijuana cases. A 20-member advisory board will help develop a statewide policy on how prosecutors should handle low-level marijuana offenses.
“The people of New Jersey have recognized and acknowledged the importance of cannabis legalization as a medicinal, social justice and economic issue, and that the time for responsible change has come,” Florio said in the Thursday statement.
