James Mulvaney, co-founder of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter LLP, has died. He was 71.

Mulvaney started MDMC with Ed Deutsch on South Street in Morristown in 1984. In the years since, the firm has grown to over 300 lawyers in nine states.

Well-respected in his field, the longtime-Chatham resident’s personal practice focused on construction litigation and surety and fidelity bonding. Recently, he was primary counsel for Fortune 500 companies involved in contract development and in litigation with respect to landfill closures, heavy highway construction, chemical plant development and construction, housing and commercial development and construction and hospital and school construction.

“I will always remember Jim as a humble leader, a devoted father and son, a lawyer’s lawyer, and a wonderfully loyal partner and dear friend,” Deutsch said. “In our more than 35 years together, both in good and tough times, we were able to build a successful Firm without ever exchanging a single harsh word. I’m really going to miss him as will everyone who had the good fortune to know him.”

Mulvaney served as chairman of the Fidelity and Surety Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association from 1981 through 1983, and in again 1987.  He was an active member in the Forum Committee on the Construction Industry, the Insurance Practices Committee and the Fidelity & Surety Committee in the New Jersey Bar Association, and was also a member of the New York State and Pennsylvania Bar Associations.

Previous to practicing law, Mulvaney served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

His obituary noted: “He taught his family to do for others, to exist for others, and to have strength to lead and persevere even in the most difficult of times. He had his own way, and indeed, Jim did it his way – ‘end of discussion.’”

He is survived by his son, Ryan; daughters Jennifer and Colleen; brothers John and Michael; sister Mary Ann Hughes; and many nieces and nephews.
