A $286 million construction project designed to ease congestion through Interchange 14A on the Newark Bay-Hudson County Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike opened Monday.

The project was paid for by toll dollars, including the design, utility relocation, right of way acquisition and construction.

The improvements were part of a 10-year, $7 billion capital program adopted by the New Jersey Turnpike Authority Board of Commissioners in 2008. Preliminary engineering on the project began in 2009. Construction began in early 2015.
