The 2018 Fortune 500 list is out, featuring 22 companies from the Garden State.

The annual list of most profitable companies in the U.S. is based upon 2017 revenue with the starting point for inclusion in 2018 creeping up 6 percent to $5.4 billion dollars.

New Brunswick-based Johnson & Johnson, down two spots from last year, leads the “home-town” pack coming in at No. 37 with revenue of $76.45 billion.

Parsippany’s PBF Energy made the biggest leap among N.J. companies, hitting its highest mark in the six years it’s appeared on the list by jumping up 35 spots to No. 135 with an almost 37 percent increase in revenue.

Princeton-headquartered NRG Energy, on the other hand, had the biggest recorded drop, down 40 spots to No. 269 with an almost 9% revenue decrease.

Florham Park-based Conduent was the only list debutant from New Jersey, placing at No. 466. Nine veteran companies – including J&J and Campbell Soup Co. – returned for a 24th year, the longest for any from New Jersey. Denise Morrison’s recent retirement at Campbell leaves just 24 Fortune 500 companies headed by women.

Eleven additional New Jersey companies ranked in the magazine’s Fortune 1000, with pharmaceutical company Zoetis of Parsippany just missing the mark for the top 500 at No. 507 and revenue of almost $5.31 billion.
