Gov. Phil Murphy signed bipartisan legislation Friday banning offshore oil and gas exploration and production off New Jersey's ocean waters.

This news comes on the eighth anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon explosion that spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana.

The New Jersey bill prohibits the Department of Environmental Protection from issuing any permits and approvals for the development of any facility or infrastructure related to offshore drilling within or outside of New Jersey waters.

Murphy said opening the Atlantic Ocean for offshore drilling would cause catastrophic and lasting economic harm to New Jersey’s 130-mile shoreline, which supports a tourism industry worth $44 billion annually and attracts millions of visitors each year.

The legislation received a 37-0 vote in the Senate; the Assembly approved it 72-1.

No need to drill off the coast-- which for NJ is a Multi-Billion Dollar tourism industry. More than enough in more rural areas of country. Plus its past time to stop depending upon oil --let alone coal!!-- for energy. More efficient, earth friendly, next big business is both in the wings and in use today. All that said, I too am sick of the poorly run/incompetent/corrupt government we have in New Jersey. Separate issue from oil.

Sure, why does America need to risk oil exploration. We can just continue to buy oil from terrorist countries that want to kill us. I am so glad I moved out of leftist NJ. Next they will be raising gasoline tax! Oh, I think they did that last year.

This will assure that NJ remains one of the highest taxed and highest cost of living in the US. I moved and saved $17,000 a year in taxes. We moved our business and save over $80,000 a year. Residents and businesses will be heading south at a higher rate now. Keep voting in the liberals and you can expect more to leave.

I applaud the governor. Like most dumb New Jerseyans, I enjoy paying higher prices for foreign energy sources. It compliments my high taxes very well.
