No. 5: Anthony Coscia POWER 100

Call Coscia an unrivaled numbers guy and you've unfairly damned him with faint praise.

A partner in the prestigious law firm of Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf, Coscia has handled all manner of corporate litigation and transactional law, but he’s best known for a canny ability to sort out the financial fine print of deals and proposals. So while he’s chairman of the board of Amtrak, Coscia also chairs its audits and finance committee. His past notable stints include topping the boards of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.

Yet none of that fully explains his ability to take charge of a project and lead it to fruition. Whether he can manage as one of the key point persons on the high-profile Gateway Program and secure funding for a New Jersey-to-Manhattan rail tunnel remains an open question. But if Gateway does get going in earnest, the jobs and general economic activity it will throw off will translate into a huge new power center — with Coscia standing center stage.

Proponents estimate Gateway would double rail transit capacity in the region, with Amtrak and New Jersey Transit maxed-out at present due to clogged rail lines. You’ve heard of the Little Engine That Could? Maybe, just maybe, Coscia can match that kind of determined success and pull off this vital $20 billion project.
