No. 7: Tammy Murphy POWER 100

New Start New Jersey’s tagline is: “Rebuilding New Jersey’s Middle Class.” That’s a tall order for a state that has experienced its share of bumps and bruises during recent years. But leading that charge is the group’s founder and chair, a woman who has thrown herself into helping find solutions for some of New Jersey’s most vexing problems. That person also happens to now be the first lady of New Jersey.

When policy in the Murphy administration is being developed, Tammy Murphy has a seat at the table. And why not? The Murphys have been a team for 24 years, and Tammy Murphy has been a confidante and adviser to her husband from their days at Goldman Sachs to his ambassadorship in Germany and throughout the campaign leading to his becoming governor.

Whether on issues such as the environment — she is founder of the Climate Reality Project — or sexual harassment — she has acknowledged being assaulted in college — Tammy Murphy’s is a voice to be reckoned with.
