William Paterson University has named Richard Helldobler, interim president of Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, as president of the Wayne, N.J., institution.

Helldobler will succeed Kathleen Waldron, who led strategic initiatives that enhanced academics and infrastructure.

Waldron—who will retire June 30, after serving as president since August 2010—guided the development of William Paterson’s Strategic Plan for 2012-2022. She also led an increase in academic offerings, including the launch of the doctor of psychology degree and helped William Paterson to become designated as a Hispanic-serving institution.

Helldobler has been interim president at Northeastern Illinois University since July 2016. Under his tenure, he headed a successful capital campaign, the College of Business and Management earned accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and Northeastern's Higher Learning Commission's accreditation was reaffirmed for a 10-year period.
