Pallone calls for probe of cosmetic products he says contain asbestos

By ,

U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone Jr., D-6th District, called on the Food and Drug Administration to investigate the retailer Claire’s after reports the store’s cosmetic products may have been contaminated with tremolite asbestos, a known carcinogen.

Pallone made this announcement Friday outside a Claire’s store in the town of Sea Girt.

An independent laboratory examined 17 Claire’s cosmetic products from nine different states, and found that each tested positive for asbestos. Claire’s primarily markets its products to girls and young women.

Pallone has long advocated for greater transparency in the cosmetic and personal care product industry. He is pushing legislation that he sponsored in Congress that would give FDA greater authority over cosmetics and personal care products.
