Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli was joined by local officials and developer Hartz Mountain Industries at the ribbon cutting for the first phase of The Harper at Harmon Meadow community last week.

The planned 469-unit rental complex is situated off Route 3 less than three miles from the Lincoln Tunnel.

“The Harper is phenomenal and it is going to be a great addition to the town of Secaucus,” Gonnelli said. “There are 92 affordable units going into this and that means a lot to us.”

The community, poised at the northeastern corner of the 3.5 million-square-foot Harmon Meadow complex, once complete also will include more than two dozen restaurants, a movie theater, an on-site convention center, nine hotels and several shopping and service stores.

“This is one of the most unique locations in the region, as it is nestled next to a picturesque nature reserve yet also offers unparalleled access to a multitude of shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and public transportation,” said Gus Milano, president and chief operating officer of Hartz Mountain Industries. “We’re delighted to now introduce a modern residential offering to the mix which will place residents in the heart of a lively address that comprises all of the elements desired for a vibrant and convenient lifestyle experience.”

Resident amenities include an NJ Transit bus stop at the complex and complimentary shuttle service to the Secaucus Junction train station.

“Without you buying into our vision and your cooperation and your trust, this wouldn’t have happened,” Leonard Stern of Hartz Mountain said. “Almost to today, this represents 50 years since I’ve made my first major investment to Secaucus. That was as a young man, who didn’t know what he was doing, but got very lucky. I borrowed the money to buy 750 acres of marshlands that today is covered with, among other things, a lot of very heavily industrial buildings that pay the town a lot of taxes.”

Residents at The Harper also have access to a salt-water swimming pool, an on-site yoga studio with a spin room, outdoor grills and valet dry cleaning service.

The Harper at Harmon Meadow is the fourth apartment rental complex by Hartz Mountain in the Meadowlands. The developer has also opened the Estuary in Weehawken, Osprey Cove and Osprey Cove East.
