Wine production in New Jersey increased 73.1% from 2011 to 2016, according to a new study from the Garden State Wine Growers Association.
In gallons, wine production increased from 405,954 to 702,671. That’s more than the capacity of an Olympic swimming pool.
“The study showed us that all the numbers were positive. Almost everything had grown exponentially since [the initial study in] 2011,” said Tom Cosentino, executive director of GSWGA.
According to the study, the wine industry accounts for the existence of 1,979 jobs — up 35.4 percent from 1,462 in 2011 — and the industry generates significant tax dollars, paying $23.24 million in federal taxes and $17.73 million in state and local taxes in 2016.
All in all, that shakes out to a $323 million economic impact on the Garden State in 2016, 39.9 percent higher than the $231 million economic impact reported in 2011.
Even for the most serious wine drinkers, that’s nothing to turn your nose up at.
“You want to experience New Jersey? Go out to the wineries,” said Cosentino. “We’ve been pushing for the last couple years to drive beverage tourism in the state. The more we can factor our wineries becoming part of an overall tourism push, we can help the state grow its revenues, and in the end, it’s about giving people an experience.”
