NYC-based The Hummus & Pita Co. is poised for New Jersey expansion in 2018, rolling out five locations in a franchise deal: Holmdel, Freehold, Old Bridge, Woodbridge and East Brunswick.

Opened by Dave Pesso and his family in 2011, The Hummus & Pita Co. serves up from-scratch pita and laffa breads, savory and sweet hummuses, vegetarian dishes, and meats cooked in a traditional taboon oven.

While Pesso’s father hails from Greece, his mother comes from an Eastern European Jewish-Israeli background.

“We wanted to bring a mixture of our culture all over—now, hummus and pita is as American as spaghetti and meatballs. When we were kids, we had to take two buses and a train to the specialty food store to get what we liked,” said Pesso. “Now it’s in everybody’s house.”

According to Pesso, his New Jersey-based customers who work in Manhattan have been asking for locations on their home turf for a while. They come for lunch and come back after work to snag dinner for their families, he said.

“The most important thing – our food is craveable and our service is raveable. It’s a little cheesy, but it’s true.”

Locations in Connecticut and Colorado are also slated to open in the new year.
