Bayonne says Barnabas' emergency center will 'mark major redevelopment' on Broadway

By ,

A developer will build a new emergency medical center for Barnabas Health in Bayonne, in what city officials hope will be a catalyst for redevelopment in the downtown.

The facility, which will be built by the firm Rendina, is slated to break ground later this month on Broadway between 23rd and 24th streets, city spokesman Joe Ryan said. The three-story building is projected to employ about 170 people. It will house several functions, including an emergency room, a radiology center, an intensive care unit, a pediatric unit and primary care services.

“This is going to mark a major redevelopment of that part of Broadway,” Ryan said. “It will take down a number of commercial buildings that were not in good shape and replace them with a brand new medical facility.”

The facility, which will also have a three-story attached parking structure, is just one project aimed at revitalizing the city. Ryan also noted there are plans for a 22-story residential building, with ground-floor commercial space, slated for the southern end of the city, plus a 10-story building farther north on 46th Street.

The new facility would sit just a few blocks from Bayonne Medical Center. A spokesman for CarePoint Health, the hospital’s owner, said the organization over the last seven years has invested millions of dollars in the facility, including a $1 million upgrade of the emergency department just last year.

“This upgrade enhanced technology as well as created a fast track program to decrease wait times,” said Jarrod Bernstein, CarePoint’s senior vice president for marketing and communications. He later added: “Patients should have access to quality care in their own city when minutes count.”

He also noted the Bayonne hospital has earned top scores from the LeapFrog Group for patient safety and quality, adding that “CarePoint Health Bayonne Medical Center has provided that care for the last 125 years and will (do) so in the future.”
