Triple Play: How banks can attract millennial talent

Triple Play is a weekly NJBIZ feature that asks top executives in New Jersey to talk about three things related to their industry.

Siya Vansia is the executive marketing coordinator at ConnectOne Bank, a community bank headquartered in Englewood Cliffs.

We asked Siya for three ways banks can attract millennial talent.

Embrace the millennial mindset. The first step to attracting millennial talent is to behave and operate in the 21st century — that means proving you understand the wants and needs of Gen Y with the technological prowess, social media acumen and the convenient, personalized services that today’s hyperconnected consumer demands.

Transcend trivial perks. While offering free food, having a foosball table or hosting frequent happy hours may make the workplace more pleasant, it’s an entrepreneurial culture of flexibility and collaboration that will ultimately build trust and loyalty among your employees.

Let us earn a seat at the table. Most importantly, millennials don’t want to be a cog in the wheel. At ConnectOne, we recognize good work by giving our millennial employees the opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas in management or steering committee meetings.
