Achievements: Creating and carrying out successful campaigns and programs to fund capital needs and organizational growth for JFK Medical Center; securing corporate and foundation grants to fund JFK’s move into the arena of population-based health; contributing to fundraising efforts of Executive Women of New Jersey, which provides scholarships to women students; serving on the board of Women Rising, a nonprofit in Hudson County.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, Queens College; master’s degree in public administration, University of Central Florida.
Role model: “My mother, Carmen Ingram, who, with only a high school education, rose to become an executive in the trust department of Barclays Bank in Jamaica—a career dominated at that time almost exclusively by men.”
What change would make workplaces friendlier to work-life balance? “Flexible time and a strong commitment to telecommuting, I also like Google’s concept of a ‘nap pod.’”
What do you wish someone had told you when you were first starting out in business? “Not to take things personally. Also, it took me a number of years to be comfortable taking risks and accepting that it is OK to experience failure, as long as you learn from it.”
