Karen Martinez BRAVO! Group Services, President and CEO
Achievements: Founding BRAVO! Group Services in 1997 and guiding it to become one of the largest privately held facility-services companies in the U.S.; turning BRAVO!’s philanthropic focus to causes such as the National Alliance for Autism Research and Habitat for Humanity; mentoring women entrepreneurs through events at Rutgers University and Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Education: Marlboro High School; executive education program, Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.
Role model: “My mom, Dorothy Borwegen. She has been through so much in her life, yet she stays positive and never stops giving up, always with a smile and quick to share laughter.”
What change would make workplaces friendlier to work-life balance? “Companies should close early the day before major holidays and the day after, allowing more family time. It’s not necessary to Christmas shop on Thanksgiving Day, when you should be playing games and reminiscing about the good old days.”
What do you wish someone had told you when you were first starting out in business? “I wish earlier on I had mentors to help navigate some difficult decisions. It’s impossible to know everything; however, everyone is looking for you to know everything.”
