No one expects someone in their twenties to fully understand how important it is to have insurance or to put money away when you can. But if you respect your families and the fact that, in many cases, they fronted the money for your education and your first car (and possibly took on some debt to do that), then you should be thinking about how you can protect them from having to deal with your problems. If they were willing to make this leap of trust and invest in a better future for you, then you should just take their word for it when they tell you that it's a good idea to have some savings and protect yourself with insurance. Independence means much more than staying out late without your parents' permission.
