Bayonne paint company plans to cut jobs

By ,

The Muralo Co., a paint manufacturer in Bayonne's southern industrial area, is planning to cut jobs after selling many of its major holdings to California Products Corporation, a manufacturer of paints and multisurface coatings in Massachusetts.

President and CEO Jim Norton told NJ.com that paint manufacturing jobs in the sold divisions are expected to be cut, but did not say how many jobs or when decisions would be made.

A press release issued by California Products stated that “several individuals” from The Muralo Co. will join California Products in the areas of “management, sales, customer service and distribution” — including Norton.

“This transaction offers a strategic fit that will add complementary products, brands, and geographies,” said Peter Longo, chairman and CEO of California Products, in a press release touting the acquisition of Muralo’s product lines as “an opportunity to leverage our skilled workforce and state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.”

Founded in 1984, The Muralo Co. has recently faced years of downsizing.

As of Wednesday, employees leaving The Muralo Co. told NJ.com that they did not have knowledge of the changes at the company.
