Middlesex Water Company announced Wednesday that the state Board of Public Utilities had approved a rate increase effective July 20.
The BPU approved a $4.2 million increase, or 6.3 percent, Middlesex Water said in a statement. The Iselin-based utility had originally asked for a $10.6 million, or 15.9 percent, increase. It then modified that to a request for an $8.1 million, or 12.1 percent, increase.
Middlesex Water presently serves retail customers in Woodbridge, Edison, South Plainfield, Carteret, Metuchen, South Amboy and Clark, as well as contract customers with the Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority and in Highland Park, Marlboro Township, East Brunswick and Rahway.
