BD Medical announced Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center that will make the center the first U.S. health care institution to use the BD Cato system for medication preparation.

BD Medical, a unit of Franklin Lakes-based BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), said in a news release that the Texas center would use the system in its outpatient infusion pharmacies to enhance safety and workflow efficiency.

"We are pleased to provide MD Anderson Cancer Center with the BD Cato system and the increased assurance that the right patient is receiving the right medication in the right dose," William A. Tozzi, President, BD Medical – Medical Surgical Systems, said in the release. "Medication errors are one of the top concerns on the minds of health care providers today and the BD Cato system offers a significant step forward in improving safety and patient outcomes, while also optimizing workflow efficiencies."

BD Cato is an automated data system that helps to reduce the possibility of medication error, streamline the preparation-to-delivery process and lessen drug waste, among other tasks.
