Comcast Business on Tuesday unveiled a device that will enable businesses to both provide wireless service for customers and maintain their own private network.

“We certainly heard from our customers that they wanted a simpler and more secure solution for providing Wi-Fi to both their employees and their customers,” said Kevin Conmy, regional vice president, Comcast Business.

“To save customers from dealing with multiple modems, routers and access points, Comcast Business wanted to offer a single piece of equipment that delivers high-speed Internet, and both private and public Wi-Fi services to provide an all-in-one business Internet experience.”

The device, the Business Wireless Gateway, allows users to assign a private signal for back-office functions, while a separate public signal is available for customers or visitors to use. The BWG has an integrated modem that can produce two Wi-Fi signals, and thus replaces both a business’s modem and wireless router, according to Conmy.

“It connects to the Comcast Business network via coaxial cable, which allows the BWG to access the Internet,” he said. “The BWG offers Comcast customers wired Ethernet connectivity while also providing both a private and public Wi-Fi network. Those two network signals are two separate service flows that go to different networks.”

The BWG will be available from Comcast Business with most Internet wireless plans.
