‘Safety group’ for workers’ comp clients expected to generate $4M in premiums this year

Advantage Specialty, a managing general insurance agency specializing in workers’ compensation insurance, and the managing health care company QualCare, partnered in 2011 to launch a “safety group” for workers’ compensation clients in multiple health sectors.

David Scibal, chief executive of Somers Point-based Advantage Specialty, said the members of that group this year received their first annual dividend: 25 percent of their workers’ compensation premiums. Called the Workers’ Compensation Safety Group, its 500 members are on track to generate about $4 million in premiums this year.

QualCare’s network of hospital and physicians provides medical care for employees who file workers’ compensation claims.

Scibal said the safety group’s performance enabled it to pay a 25 percent dividend because it “embraces safety and loss control” with an eye toward reducing both the severity and the frequency of workplace accidents and illnesses that generate these types of claims.

“The performance of the group has been incredible. It is a matter of controlling the losses and having a good group of insured,” Scibal said.

He said that for physician offices and pharmacies, typical claims might be lifting injuries or slips and falls. There is also considerable attention to safe and clean clinical practices to help medical office staff avoid infections.

In addition to the 25 percent dividend, Advantage Specialty members received credits of up to 20 percent when they purchased their worker’s comp policies, Scibal said.

Advantage Specialty deals with insurance brokers who refer workers’ compensation clients to the company, and the company is continuing to add brokers to its network.

The health services provider group is one of several workers’ comp lines that Advantage Specialty underwrites. The company has a Hospitality Safety Group, which specializes in hotels and restaurants, which paid a 10 percent dividend this year and has just launched a safety group for its auto dealer clients.

Annette Catino, chief executive of QualCare, said health care providers can benefit from joining the group.

“Participants who paid $10,000 in premiums received a $2,500 check—that is unheard of these days,” she said.

Advantage Specialty also provides workers comp to several other occupational specialties like moving and storage.
