N.J. back in business, more than 2,500 manufacturing jobs added over the last year

According to the 2014 New Jersey Manufacturers’ Register, New Jersey ended its thirteen year slump in manufacturing employment by adding 2,674 jobs over the last year.

“High business costs and global competition have adversely affected New Jersey’s manufacturing sector for over a decade,” Tom Dublin said, president of Manufacturers’ News Inc. “The state’s investments in technology and innovation combined with a top-notch workforce will hopefully continue to support this upward trend.”

9,363 manufacturers currently call New Jersey home and employ roughly 400,000 workers.

Notable openings this year have included the Bayer Healthcare facility in Whippany and Tilcon New York’s asphalt plant in Wharton, with several companies such as Amneal Pharmaceuticals, Silvi Concrete and Shiseido America cosmetics and fragrances also expanded into and across the state.

With over 4,000 employees, the largest manufacturers in the state continue to be Lockheed Martin in Moorestown, Merck & Co. in Rahway, and Alcatel-Lucent in Murray Hill.

Chemicals, which remains the top industrial sector by employment, saw a 5.4 percent increase in jobs, adding to its existing workforce of 75,000 and accounting for 20 percent of New Jersey’s industrial employment. Jobs in food products, transportation equipment, rubber and plastics also increased slightly.

Printing and publishing, the state’s second largest sector by employment, decreased in jobs by 3.4 percent. Losses were also felt in the housing sector relating to the reduced production of lumber, stone, clay, glass, furniture and fixtures.

And even though Newark remains the top city for manufacturing with over 9,500 jobs and a 5.2 percent increase in employment, northeast New Jersey saw an overall half percent decrease in jobs from its strong workforce of over 270,000.

But not to worry—northwest New Jersey saw a dramatic 7.8 percent increase in employment, while all of southern New Jersey saw a slight increase of 1 percent.
