Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center on Thursday named Neil M. Sullivan as its new general counsel.
Sullivan is leaving his post as the New Jersey assistant insurance commissioner to join the Secaucus hospital. Widely considered one of the state's leading insurance experts, he is a veteran of more than 30 years in the industry and worked for Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey for more than a decade before going to Trenton in 2010.
"We welcome Neil and look forward to his leadership and expertise as we continue to transform the facility into the community healthcare destination for Hudson County and the surrounding region," said Lynn McVey, acting president and chief executive for MHMC. "His experience with state government and insurance and his keen understanding of healthcare finance and the Affordable Care Act will help Meadowlands more efficiently operate in this environment of increased regulation."
As general counsel, Sullivan will be the hospital's primary counsel on all legal and compliance functions while working directly with the hospital board on the development and implementation of new lines of service. He will also be responsible for the oversight and management of external legal counsel, participate in the development of hospital policies and procedures, and represent the hospital before regulatory agencies and authorities.
Sullivan comes to MHMC from the state Department of Banking and Insurance where he served as assistant commissioner for Life & Health. His work at DOBI brought him face-to-face with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. This placed him at the forefront of new health care delivery and financial models, including accountable care organizations, the move by health system's into the health insurance business and the transition to electronic health records.
Before joining DOBI in 2010, Sullivan spent 11 years as the assistant general counsel at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey. Before Horizon, he had an 18 year career with The Prudential Insurance Company of America.
"I am excited to join the Meadowlands team and am thrilled to be able to assist in the continued transformation of this outstanding community hospital," said Sullivan. "This hospital has made great strides forward under the facility's current ownership, and with its continued commitment to quality and patient safety and ongoing investment in infrastructure improvements, there is great potential for short and long-term success."
Sullivan holds three degrees from Rutgers University: law, MBA and undergraduate. He also holds a Chartered Life Underwriter designation from The American College and is a designated Fellow of the Life Management Institute. He is a member of the New Jersey Bar and its Health Law Section and served on the board of the New Jersey Life & Health Guaranty Association.
NJBIZ ranked him among the Power 50 in Healthcare in both 2012 and 2013 (15th and 13th respectively).
Meadowlands said that last it was recognized with an "A" Grade for Patient Safety by The Leapfrog Group, a leading watchdog for patient safety and healthcare quality. It was one of a small number of hospitals nationwide that went from a "C" facility to and "A" facility within a year. Meadowlands is an acute care, 230-bed hospital and all patient rooms are private rooms.
