The Prudential Center set a new attendance record Saturday when a George Strait concert drew nearly 17,600 fans to the Newark arena, executives with the venue said this week.

The concert broke a record that had stood for five of the more than six years since the building opened, the arena said. The previous mark, a Metallica concert in January 2009, drew 17,549 fans to downtown Newark, about 50 fewer than the iconic country artist.

Strait made his stop in the Brick City as part of The Cowboy Rides Away Tour, a two-year farewell engagement that will wrap up later this year. The 61-year-old musician, who has more than 60 No. 1 hits to his name, said he will continue to play select dates around the country after the tour is over.

The Prudential Center said the record follows a successful 2013, which included being named the third-highest-grossing building in the U.S. in the year-end rankings by Venues Today, an industry publication. The arena also recorded a slight uptick in ticket sales in 2013, when it sold nearly 410,000 tickets during a year that included 16 sellouts.

Don't forget to add that fact people were selling lower level tickets on stubhub for 15$ each. Not too amazing of a feat
