Camden-based Cooper University Health Care has appointed Anthony J. Mazzarelli as chief medical officer for the organization. Mazzarelli is a physician, attorney and bioethicist.
According to the announcement, Mazzarelli has held various roles at Cooper since 1999. In his most recent role as the senior vice president of operations and deputy chief medical officer he oversaw a reorganization of the Quality and Patient Safety Department which assisted Cooper in its recent recognition for the first time as a 'top performer' by the Joint Commission as well as Cooper's first improvement in the nationally recognized quality and safety Leapfrog Report Card.
He helped start Cooper's new Process Improvement Office which has included the introduction of new principles, such as Lean Six Sigma, a methodology for operational efficiency improvements. Prior to that, he was the vice president of strategic planning and implementation responsible for assisting in the creation of strategic health system plans and business development projects, the company said in a statement.
In 2012, Mazzarelli was named one of the 50 most power people in New Jersey health care by NJBIZ.
