NBCUniversal has opened a state-of-the-art technology center in Englewood Cliffs, the company announced Monday.
The 63,000-square-foot, $17 million center will house the company's core technology team and creates an environment where employees, startups and industry technology partners can experiment with new devices, applications and business models.
The center will also house NBCUniversal's new Media Labs operations, which is focused on working with academic research groups, start-up companies and the global venture capital community to encourage technological innovation and to help develop new business models for the company.
"The NBCUniversal Technology Center is the perfect home for our technology team," said John Wallace, president of operations and technical services for NBCUniversal in a statement. "It's been designed to foster real creativity and collaboration, and we think it will quickly become a key center for innovation at NBCUniversal."
The company also announced that Sanjay Macwan has been named senior vice president and chief technology officer for Media Labs. Macwan previously spent more than two decades at AT&T, starting his career there as a software developer before working his way up to vice president of AT&T's Chief Technology Office.
"Sanjay brings to this new role an entrepreneurial approach to the business, and a proven track record of successfully spotting and harnessing emerging trends in technology in a wide range of areas," Wallace said. "That combination makes him a perfect fit for Media Labs, which will serve as an in-house incubator for new technology concepts relating to our core businesses.
