Campbell's CEO: 'Women can be ambitious and interested in shoes'

That's right: Denise Morrison, CEO of Campbell Soup Company and a woman routinely cited as one of the most powerful in business, has confirmed it is in fact possible to be both business-minded and feminine.

In a newly released report from Executive Women of New Jersey that analyzes gender diversity on corporate boards in the state, Morrison championed the benefits companies can glean from having more women represented in the boardroom.

She also gave women permission to embrace all aspects of their personalities.

"My favorite quote from my mother is, 'Ambition is part of femininity,'" Morrison said. "I believe that women can be ambitious and be interested in shoes."

That goes back to what I've heard so many women say in the past few months I've been writing for this blog, which is that women don't have to be more like men just to succeed in business.

I mean, if Morrison — the CEO of a Fortune 500 company — can admit to hearing the siren song of a fierce pair of pumps, that's proof right there that femininity and business savvy are not mutually exclusive.

I spoke with Morrison after a breakfast unveiling the new report on Tuesday morning and confirmed that whole shoe thing wasn't just a throwaway line.

"I love shoes," she said with a laugh.

And for what it's worth, the pair she had on — blue suede pumps with some interesting black details — were stunning.
