Marlton-based Advocare, one of the largest independent physician groups in southern New Jersey, announced Wednesday a further expansion with the 19-surgeon practice, Surgical Specialists of New Jersey.

The Advocare network now includes more than 500 providers at 96 member practices covering a wide range of specialties, as well as primary care and pediatrics.

Dr. John M. Tedeschi, chief executive of Advocare, said Surgical Specialists, "Will bring even greater expertise to the Advocare network, and their patients will benefit from the expanded resources that Advocare provides."

Dr. Christopher J. Boynton, a Lumberton-based surgeon who's among the new members, said "Advocare will help us run our practices, so we can spend more time taking care of our patients and less time with the business aspects of medicine."

Founded in 1998 by Tedeschi, a pediatrician, Advocare has evolved from an alliance of 33 pediatricians to one of the largest independent, multi-specialty physician groups in New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia region, serving more than 500,000 patients.
