The Obama administration is extending until Tuesday the deadline for Americans to sign up for health plans under the Affordable Care Act, the Washington Post and Reuters reported on Monday.

The original deadline was midnight Monday to sign up on healthcare.gov for health insurance plans that begin Jan. 1. According to the Washington Post, Obama administration officials have changed the rules so that people will have an extra day to enroll.

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey spokesman Tom Vincz said the company has not been formally notified of the deadline extension but  "it’s our understanding that (the government) has made that extension."

The switch is one of several rule changes that have marked the launch of the ACA. Insurers were allowed to extend for one years old health plans that don't comply with the ACA, but major insurers in New Jersey have declined to take part. And the Obama administration is exempting from the individual mandate, which requires American to get insurance in 2014, people whose plans were cancelled and who have been unable to find affordable coverage.

Obama administration officials have said the troubled healthcare.gov Web site is working smoothly. Open enrollment period extends through the end of March, but those who want to be covered on Jan. 1, 2014 must now enroll by midnight Tuesday.
