About: After an accident in 2012 shuttered a critical production line for Evonik Industries, Jeffrey Smith managed communications to both employees and customers who were affected by the outage. Smith also has spearheaded efforts to create a new regional technical center to support the specialty chemical company’s service to the automotive, aerospace, medical device and solar industries.

First Job: “At NSF International, as an auditor for food and beverage equipment. As an auditor, I was introduced to many companies and saw a large number of approaches to business. This helped me gain a broad base of experience that I still apply today.”

Role Model: “The head of my business unit for the last 10 years, Dr. Joachim Leluschko. It is easy to be conservative and play it safe in today’s business environment … Seeing Dr. Leluschko sometimes go against this momentum, to challenge the norm and take risks has influenced how I approach business and managing people.”
