Ira Zlotowitz, 38 Eastern Union Funding, Founder and President
Accomplishments: Co-founding Eastern Union Funding in 2001, and building it into one of the country’s largest privately owned commercial mortgage companies; developing a mentoring program that helps employees advance their careers; starting a nonprofit that encourages students in junior high school to take part in extracurricular studies.
Best Business Advice: “Figure out what you do best and stick to it. I’m a mortgage broker, a numbers guy. For non-related tasks, I bring in people with other areas of focus. That’s why our marketing, data and underwriting departments are so valuable.”
What You Wish You’d Known Earlier: “How big the company would get, so I could have beefed up the appropriate departments sooner. If I’d known how much the underwriting department would speed up deal flow, for instance, I would have stepped up that area years ago.”
Most Influential Role Model: “My dad. He built what is arguably the most successful business in his industry. When I’m out of ideas, or just unsure about my latest project, I don’t have to look very far for advice.”
