Many of us spend the bulk of our time each week in an office chair, but that doesn't necessarily mean we have to be sedentary about it. A recent trend sees more office workers exercising on the job.
Sit. Type. Get up. Sit again. Type again. I do it, too.
But (cue triumphant like what plays when a pharma commercial introduces their latest wonder-drug) it doesn't have to be that way.
They are standing, walking a treadmill, sitting on an exercise ball, and even pedalling while they work. That last one is the most surprising to me. But the DeskCycle Desk Exercise Bike Pedal Exerciser, despite its trainwreck of a name, gets all five stars from 32 of the 38 Amazon.com users who have reviewed it. And for $150, it may just be the steal of the century if the chair-haters are to be believed.
Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Dr. James Levine told the AP's Sam Hananel that "you're basically sitting yourself into a coffin."
Okay I'm back. That last sentence prompted me to take a walk around the building.
The lesson here is that it doesn't take much to get a real benefit during the work day, whether it's a treadmill set to one or two miles per hour or the world's tiniest stationary bike hidden away under your desk. Luckily for me, the existential anxiety this post has instilled in me will keep me nervously twitching for at least the rest of today.
