In its scheduled voting session Thursday afternoon, the state Senate will consider legislation mandating employers report their new hires to the Department of Human Services, a measure aimed at preventing employees from fraudulently collecting unemployment benefits.
The bill, which unanimously passed the Assembly in June, also will apply to any employees rehired by the same employer after at least 60 days of separation from his or her previous term of employment.
The intent of the legislation is to have DHS then share the information with other state agencies to ensure no illegal collection of unemployment benefits takes place.
According to the bill, employers will have up to 20 days to submit the required information for new hires and rehires to the state.
Anthony Bucco (R-Randolph) is a primary sponsor of the Assembly version of the bill. The Senate version is sponsored by Tony Bucco (R-Denville) and Richard Codey (D-Livingston).
