Princeton University was named the top college in the country Tuesday morning by U.S. News & World Report, a coveted honor by national universities.
University spokesperson Martin Mbugua said in a statement that while the school is "pleased" with the recognition, "no formulaic rankings can fully capture the distinctiveness of any institution." He said rankings should be one among many factors considered by those looking for the right college for them.
Rutgers–New Brunswick (at No. 69) and Stevens Institute of Technology (No. 82) also made the top 100 rankings. Overall, five New Jersey schools earned a spot on the list as Seton Hall University (No. 128), Rutgers–Newark (No. 142) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (No. 150) all were honored.
U.S. News & World Report began ranking schools in 1983. Here are the complete rankings for top 200.
Harvard, Stanford and Penn (Wharton) were ranked as the top three graduate business schools.
Drew University, in Morris County, was ranked in the list of top national liberal arts schools, coming in at No. 107.
Princeton edged a number of other Ivy League schools for the overall top honor, as Harvard, Yale and Columbia took the next three spots. In all, six of the eight Ivy League schools landed in the Top 10.
Stanford University and the University of Chicago tied for the No. 5 spot, followed by a three-way tie at No. 7 between Duke, MIT and Penn.
Cal Tech and Dartmouth tied for the No. 10 spot.
U.S. News & World Report has a number of regional rankings as well.
The College of New Jersey was ranked No. 5 among regional universities in the North. Regional universities are defined as those that have a full range of undergraduate programs, some master's programs but few doctoral programs.
Three other Jersey schools made the Top 25 on that list, as Rider and Rowan universities tied for No. 18, and Rutgers–Camden was No. 24.
Monmouth (30), Ramapo (33), Montclair State (54), Stockton (60) and FDU (69) made the Top 100. Also cited were St. Peter's and William Paterson (tied at 101), Georgian Court (111) and Caldwell (126).
