The Rutgers University Foundation, which is continuing to work toward the $1 billion goal of the fundraising campaign it launched in 2010, announced Monday it named a new president to help meet its goal.

Nevin Kessler comes to Rutgers from North Carolina State University, where he has served as vice chancellor for university advancement and president of the NC State University Foundation since 2007. His main challenge will be raising that $1 billion; that campaign is designed to support faculty, research, academic facilities, scholarships and fellowships, and university and community programs.

Kessler succeeds Carol Herring, who retired as president of the Rutgers Foundation in June. Since June, acting president of the foundation has been Ron Wilson, former chair of the Rutgers board of overseers.

According to Rutgers, during his tenure at NC State, Kessler launched a $1.5 billion fundraising campaign, helped secure a $40 million gift — the largest in the history of the university — to endow and name the College of Management, identified more than 15,000 new potential major donors, and implemented the university's first development and alumni relations initiative in Asia.

In a statement, Rutgers President Robert Barchi said Nevin has an impressive track record in the fundraising area.

"His leadership will ensure that we reach our fundraising goals as we complete our unprecedented capital campaign, which will expand private support for programs and initiatives, allowing us to better support our students and the entire university community," Barchi said.

According to the announcement, Kessler will join Rutgers on Oct. 14.
