The Employers Association of New Jersey goes national next month with its first online employment law course for human resources professionals across the United States.
EANJ President John Sarno, an employment attorney, will teach the live online course, being presented in a partnership with LexisNexis and XpertHR. There will be nine sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, from Sept. 20 to Nov. 15.
"It has been our goal to go national now for a number of years, and we've finally been able to achieve that," Sarno said.
EANJ will continue to pursue its mission of providing employment law courses and seminars geared to the needs of New Jersey employers. But Sarno said national employment law, much of it driven by U.S. Supreme Court rulings, accounts for a significant amount of the legal knowledge HR professionals in New Jersey and nationwide require to do their jobs.
"Our mission is focused on our geographic location, but what the Web allows us to do is transcend the limitations of our physical boundaries, and that really gives us a national outreach," Sarno said.
Sarno said in recent years, the U.S. Supreme Court has altered the federal employment law landscape.
For example, the court "has dramatically changed the law on retaliation — who can sue an employer for retaliation," Sarno said. "And it has dramatically changed the defenses an employer has to that type of lawsuit."
Among the topics the course will address: federal civil rights laws, background checks, gender and pregnancy, discriminatory and unequal pay, religious discrimination and reasonable accommodation, employees with disabilities, age discrimination, and workplace harassment and retaliation.
