Developer says Irvington mall could open this fall

By ,

The Valley Mall Plaza, in Irvington, could open for business as early as this fall, developer Joseph Sarder said today during an open house at the property, off I-78 on Chancellor Avenue.

Sarder, who is developing the mall with The Orfali Group, said the 230,000-square-foot mall is more than 35 percent leased. The largest tenant, Value Zone, will occupy 25,000 square feet on the first floor, he said. The second floor will include a food court and space for kiosks for small retailers.

Valley Mall Plaza is a two-story, enclosed shopping mall that’s now in its final construction phase on the site of the former Valley Fair store.

Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith hosted the open house at the mall, which he said will have space for as many as 77 stores, and could create several hundred jobs.

Smith said until the old Valley Fair closed more than six years ago, it was a major retail destination in town for decades, providing a foundation for the new mall.

Sarder said he’s optimistic about getting commitments from retailers.

“We are seeing a better mood for business and for financing, he said, adding that 25 stores have signed up so far.
